The soft structure lab at Michigan is focused on gels and gelation in both natural and synthetic polymers.  We perform physical experiments, analyze structure, and develop kinetic models to gauge structural evolution or performance in these systems.  In the laboratory, we have dedicated instruments for rheology, DSC, and sedimentation experiments, in addition to general laboratory space to perform materials synthesis.  We apply our knowledge to problems encountered in controlled release, biomass fractionation and reuse, and physical adsorption schemes in microplastics capture including tool development.  With COVID, the lab also developed skills relating to the design, structure and properties of non-wovens layers and other materials deployed as PPE.
